Hannah Blythyn MS celebrates pioneering Welsh women at Purple Plaques Cymru event in the Senedd

20/03/2026

Hannah Blythyn MS has spoken at a special celebration event in the Senedd recognising the achievements of women commemorated by Purple Plaques Cymru.

Since 2018, 22 women from across Wales have been honoured with Purple Plaques, with another due to be recognised in early March. The event brought together those involved in unveiling the plaques over the years, celebrating the lasting impact of these remarkable women on Welsh life and history.

During the event, Hannah paid tribute to Eirene White, a journalist and pioneering politician who was one of the first three women to represent Wales in Parliament. Eirene began her career as the first female political correspondent at the Manchester Guardian in 1945 before going on to serve as MP for East Flintshire for 20 years. She later became Baroness White of Rhymney and continued her public service in the House of Lords.

Eirene White’s Purple Plaque was unveiled at Flint Town Hall in 2022, recognising her significant contribution to public life and her role in advancing opportunities for women.

Speaking after the event, Hannah Blythyn MS said:

“It was a real privilege to take part in this special celebration in the Senedd, bringing together so many people who have worked to recognise the achievements of inspiring women across Wales.

“Eirene White was a pioneering politician of her age and someone who truly helped blaze the trail for others. From her early career in journalism to her years representing East Flintshire, she made a lasting difference to her community and beyond.

It is only right that she is recognised in this way, particularly in the community she served for two decades. I hope her story, and those of the other women honoured through Purple Plaques, will continue to inspire future generations to learn about and build on their legacy.”

The Purple Plaques initiative continues to shine a light on the often-overlooked contributions of women in Wales, ensuring their stories are recognised and remembered for years to come.
