Hannah Blythyn MS has welcomed the announcement of new railway stations across Wales, including a major new station serving Deeside, describing it as a “game-changer” for jobs, investment, and connectivity in North Wales.
The plans form part of a long-term commitment by the Welsh Labour Government, working with the UK Labour Government, to transform the rail network and reverse years of underfunding by the previous Conservative administration.
The new station in Deeside will improve access to one of the region’s most important employment areas, helping local people get to work more easily, supporting business growth, and attracting new investment into the area.
Speaking following the announcement, Hannah Blythyn said:
“This is fantastic news for Deeside and for communities right across North Wales.
“A new station here will mean better access to jobs, new opportunities for young people, and stronger links for our local businesses. It’s exactly the kind of investment our area has needed for far too long.
“I have consistently campaigned for improved rail services and new stations in North Wales, and I’m proud to see that work starting to deliver real results.
“I will also continue to press the case for a new station in Greenfield, which would be a major boost for our coastal communities, tourism, and our local economy.”
The investment forms part of a wider programme led by Transport for Wales, with up to £14 billion planned for rail improvements across the country.
The programme will support thousands of new jobs, improve journey times, and create an integrated public transport network linking rail, bus, and active travel.
First Minister, Eluned Morgan, said:
“We are now in an unprecedented position to deliver the next chapter of transformation for rail services in Wales. We have secured long-term commitments to key projects and a renewed ambition for our rail network.
“Changes of this scale don’t happen overnight but they do happen when there is vision, determination, and cooperation. We’ve already proved that with the Core Valley Lines, and we are beginning to see the same momentum with Network North Wales. When you have the ambition, the commitment and the will, real progress follows - and we have all three.
“Today marks another important milestone for rail as Transport for Wales publishes an exciting and essential pipeline for future investment. This includes projects the length and breadth of our nation. We warmly welcome the UK Government’s support for these plans and for their commitment to putting right the injustice of Welsh rail underfunding left by the previous government.
“In the near term, I’m pleased to see backing for the essential work at Padeswood and Buckley. This will transform journeys between Wrexham and Liverpool, unlock economic opportunities across north Wales, and allow plans for the new Deeside station to accelerate. I also welcome the UK Government’s support for CardiƯ Parkway, and we remain committed to working closely with all partners to complete the full business case and development plans.”
The new Deeside station is expected to play a key role in strengthening the Wrexham–Liverpool line and supporting long-term economic growth across Flintshire and North East Wales.
