The next Welsh Labour Government would take action to improve access to hospital transport, if re-elected in May.
Welsh Labour knows the importance of not only bringing waiting lists down, but also of enabling people to reach those NHS appointments, especially if they are far from home.
That’s why the next Welsh Labour Government would review and enhance the current system of non-emergency transport for people with medical needs, especially for people in rural areas. As well as ensure that all health boards develop a Transport Plan, including plans for public transport, car parking and active travel. And go on to make sure health boards work with local councils to agree funding to improve transport routes to and from hospital sites.
Hannah Blythyn MS has welcomed Welsh Labour’s commitment to improving access to hospitals, particularly for patients who face challenges getting to appointments. Highlighting the importance of reliable transport in ensuring people can access the care they need, especially in rural communities.
Hannah Blythyn MS said:
“Getting to hospital shouldn’t be another worry for people who are already dealing with illness or treatment. These pledges show Welsh Labour’s commitment to putting patients first – improving transport, supporting rural communities, and making sure everyone can access the NHS care they deserve.”
She also praised plans to strengthen non-emergency patient transport, improve public transport links, and ensure health boards work closely with local authorities. Hannah said these measures would help reduce stress for patients and families at difficult times.
Welsh Labour leader Eluned Morgan said:
“Needing to have medical treatment is a stressful enough time without factoring in how you're going to get there. If we're re-elected in May, we will ensure that all health boards develop Transport Plans access to public transport, car parking and active travel, relieving one element of stress away for patients.
“Welsh Labour believes ensuring everyone can have access to the medical treatment they need has to be a priority. We'll do all we can to make that happen, including bringing waiting lists down, and ensuring people can get to appointments."
Free parking is already available at all NHS thanks to a Welsh Labour policy announced in 2008.
The party has already announced plans to introduce 100 new bus routes across Wales prioritising healthcare settings and public services, alongside introducing a £2 fare cap to make public transport more affordable and accessible for all.
