Farmers encouraged to apply as Sustainable Farming Scheme opens

09/03/2026

Farmers across North Wales are being encouraged to begin their applications for the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS), as the 2026 Single Application Form window opens this week.

The application window will remain open until 15 May 2026, giving farmers the opportunity to confirm whether they wish to enter the Sustainable Farming Scheme or continue claiming through the Basic Payment Scheme.

Member of the Sened for Delyn, Hannah Blythyn MS, is urging farmers to begin the process early to ensure they have time to seek support and resolve any queries ahead of the deadline.

Commenting, Hannah Blythyn MS said:

“Farmers in North Wales are at the heart of our rural communities and our local economy, and they play a vital role not only in producing high-quality food but also in caring for our landscapes and environment.

“The Sustainable Farming Scheme recognises the work many farmers are already doing to manage habitats, improve soil health and support biodiversity, while continuing to put food production first.

“I would strongly encourage farmers who are considering applying to start early, seek advice where needed and make sure they have the support in place to take full advantage of what the scheme can offer.”

The Sustainable Farming Scheme, delivered by the Welsh Government, is designed to support farmers to produce food sustainably while protecting nature, improving soil health and strengthening the long-term resilience of rural businesses.

Farmers considering joining the scheme are encouraged to check land data and field boundaries through the Manage My Land process before submitting their Single Application Form.

Many farms may already be completing key Universal Actions including soil testing, habitat management and benchmarking with further time available throughout the year to complete requirements.

Deputy First Minister with responsibility for Climate Change and Rural Affairs, Huw Irranca-Davies, described the opening of applications as a landmark moment for Welsh farming.

Farmers can review habitats and land features through RPW Online and familiarise themselves with the Universal Actions relevant to their business. Further details on Optional and Collaborative Actions are expected later this month to help farmers plan future participation.
